So what exactly is a baby shower? In a number of countries, most notably America, and now becoming more popular in the UK, probably because of the baby shower gifts, a baby shower is a way to celebrate the upcoming or even recent birth of a child by presenting gifts to the parents, or usually the mother, at a party.
It is thought that the term shower is often assumed to mean that the expectant mother is literally “showered” with baby shower gifts, or at least she may hope she is showered with gifts!
In the past, baby showers were only given for the family’s first baby, and only the mothers were invited. The original intent, it is believed, was for women to share wisdom and lessons on the art of becoming a mum. However, more recently, it has become very common to hold them for more than one baby, and even have more than just one baby shower, such as one with friends and another with co-workers, with the added benefit of receiving even more baby shower gifts. No doubt part of the increasing popularity of baby showers in the UK is following the trend of celebrities and pop stars who are often reported as splashing out huge sums of money on their own baby showers, or on others baby shower gifts.
Baby showers are an alternative to other countries celebrations of nativity such as Baptisms.
According to some, because the party centres on giving baby shower gifts, the baby shower is usually arranged and hosted by a very close friend, rather than a member of the family, since it is considered quite rude for families to beg others for gifts on behalf of their own family.
However, it is not completely unknown for a close female family member to host the baby shower, often the grandmother, mother or even sister.
There are no set rules for when or where showers can be held. The number of guests and style of entertainment can be decided by the host. Most hosts invite only women to baby showers, although there is no firm rule excluding men. If the shower is held after the baby’s birth, then the baby is usually brought, too. Showers typically include food but not a full meal, and usually also have a generous selection of drinks, including alcoholic drinks, if not for mum, then just to keep the other guests happy, who don’t have to get up in the middle of the night for feeding time!
Guests bring small baby shower gifts for the expectant mother. Typical gifts related to babies including nappies, blankets, baby bottles, clothes and toys and often personalised baby shower gifts as contained in our baby boutique. It is common to open the baby shower gifts during the party, so all can see.
